SHIP’S RACE AGAINST DEATH,
AUCKLAND, August 29.
The motor ship Ardehvohr, which Arrived yesterday froin New York, raced against death for the last week of the voyage, hut in vain.- v A .steward, named Hudson, aged 21, was stricken with pneumonia and lay delirious in his hunk while the ship was driven at full speed. OiHhis arrival lie ivas rushed to hospital, hut he died at 10 o’clock to-day.

-WELLINGTON; August 27.. ./ A message received by the New . (Zealand Stock Exchange* Association says that North Broken Hill, Ltd., has declared a dividend of lava share, payable in Melbourne oh September 30th. . Last year the gross mining profit was £11319. Revenue froih interest i i£158,772, .and the. net profit was re- v turned as £B/1,029. The dividend was M 8$ per cent. Reserves were £1,512,438 '&'± and depreciation of .re'arvee £467,000. . MR it. WELLINGTON, August 27. To mark his long service as Government Statistician and .as a mark of the personal esteem In which he is held, the staff of the Census and Statistics Office made a presentation to Mr M. Fraser, who recently was appointed to the office of Under Secretary for Internal Affairs. The Minister for Internal Affairs' (the Hon. A. Hamilton), on behalf of the officers of the Department, presented to., Mr Fraser a framed photograph of the staff, , <md to Mrs Fraser two leather-upholstered fire stools.
