The members of the Tariff Board to-day expressed* their amazement ,at 4he high cost of wireless receivers in Australia, as compared with the prices in America, Evidence was given that the sixvalve receiver is being retailed in America at about:£7/10/-, and yet that it'costs £37/10/- in Sydney. The fourvalve all electric set ip retailed . at Sydney at £l7/17/-, but it. could be purchased in America at about thirtytwo shillings, Mr S.’ Grime, of the Amalgamated Wireless Ltd., explained in the.defence of protective duties -“that the Australian radio industry bad developed wonderfully since' the! American radio goods were kept out, while the Australian workmanship is equal to the best in the world. An attempt, he said, had been made to secure a market in New Zealand, but with little success, owing to the severe competition there of the cheaper American receivers, which were made by mass production.

CHECKING INTERFERENCE

RUGBY, August 26,

The Radio Exhibition at Olympia was vSsj/ted this morning by the Postmaster-General, who inspected apparatus staged by the Post Office to assist in cutting out interference with broadcast reception. He praised the close co-operation existing between the Post Office and the British Broadcasting Company, which had enabled more than 10,000“ cases of electric interference to be dealt with annually.
