DRASTIC PUNISHMENT SUGGESTED.

DUNEDIN, August 24,

Penalties much more drastic than those at present in force against intoxicated motorists are proposed 'by the Otago Temperance Reform Council. At a meeting of the council, the following resolution was carried ; “Tjhait the Otago Temperance Reform Council views with grave concern the increasing number,, of accidents, many of them fatal, cauWl by intoxicated motorists. This council considers that more stringent be imposed and petitions the Minister for Justice to pass legislation imposing a minimum penalty of £2O, together with cancellation of' the license .for two years, for a first offence. For a second offence the council considers that licenses should be cancelled for a] time, and that imprisonment for at •least twelve months should also bo imposed.” .. • ■„•
