PLEA FOR HELP

AUSTRALIAN FARMERS’ - PLIGHT

COMPLAINTS AGAINST MR LYONS

SYDNEY, August 24

Senator Hardy, leader of .the United Country Party . Movement, declarer that 5 the position in the country is so desperate that, unless immediate help is given, commercial chaos will follow. He says that the Lyons Government while in step with the bankers and manufacturers, is hopelessly out of step with the man on the land. The Government is obsessed with economy campaigns, while wool and wheatmen are going bankrupt. “The gap between costs and selling prices; of primary products is ' estimated,” he adds, “.at upwards of 30 per cent. There is nothing for it but an increase of exchange to shield the producer*. ” 1 .... Replying to a statement by the Commonwealth Prime Minister, Mr J. A. Lyons, Dr- Sa-rle Pdge- declared that the Country Party was still anxious to give the most loyal support and cooperation to the Government, but, he added, not one of the platform points had yet been carried out. They included a downward revision of the tariff.' Practicaly every* primary industry was actually facing bankruptcy because of the Federal Government’s failure to reduce the tariff.

The “Sydney Morning Herald’s” Canberra correspondent says that although no definite plans have been formulated for an attack on the Federal Ministry by the Country Party, it is expected that when the Federal House of Representatives meets on August 31 the party will move the adjournment on the opening day to voice their grievances against the policy of the Government in regard to exchange, tariff, and the wool and wheatindustries.
