A paper on population factors, affecting employment, read at the Science congress, revealed that only 57 per cent of Australia’s bread-winners /were engaged in actual production. Commerce and transport absorbed -24 per cent., and professional and domes--1 tic occupations about 18 per Cent. Tile high proportion in commerce htld 'transport necessarily contributed to the high costs, which handicapped Australian production,.-... ■ The paper was prepared by U.E*ley, He calculated that for every hundred 'producers in Now Zealand, there were S 3 non producers.
