BALLOON! ASCENT
NARROW ESCAPE - / WHILE LANDING.

ROME, August 19,
Professor Riccard had a narrow escape from death when landing. Peasants misunderstood liis Kronen and relinquished then- , hold on the ‘mooring ropes instead of fastening them to trees. Consequently the 1 balloon shot wp 150 feet and crashed down again, damaging the envelope. Only their helmets saved the, lives of Professor Piccard and Heir Cosy ns. Both fell to the ground when they emerged from the gondola and lay gasping for ten minutes.
A HAZARDOUS SCHEME.
TORONTO, August 19
The ascent into the stratosphere from Hudson Bay planned by Professor Piccard is regarded as a hazardous Undertaking by Mr John Patterson, a leading, Canadian meteorologist. The ' metal gondola would be at the mercy of the wind dud might be carried miles from human habitation in the Arctic/ wastes.
