In the witness-box, Harrington said that she had known. Cartledge . for about two years. She denied .either haying thrown,' her arms round the constable or having., called out to warn Cartledge.

The case savoured cf melodrama. Cartledge might have been very seriously inj -reel 'through her actions. He should have been: left to get out. of his own difficulties. Thd police might very well Wave brought the more serious charge of having aided a prisoner to escape, but he thought that the police had treated Miss Harrington very fairly.
Harrington was fined £s, in default imprisonment for a month.
