Amended prison regulations were gazetted to-night which make provision for a slight economy measure in the direction of reducing prisoners’ “in“dustry wages” in the- gaols. fTheir “industry-wages,” which are paid to the prisoners’ dependents, and which amount • approximately to £10,900- per year, are not reduced, hut a saving of £6OO is to be effected in the amounts paid to . the prisoners themselves., The total payments throughout New Zealand in this respect formerly amounted approximately to £7360 per year. The effect of the alterations is to reduce the, < “industry earnings” from a net sum of 3s per week to 2s 9d pei week.
