EXCITING PIG HUNT

SPORT IN TARARUAS

MASTJERTON, August 16

A party of seven pig-hunters secured a real “old man” boar in bush country in the Tararuas yesterday:' The party had seven dogs with them,' and they found the Captain Cooker (who was suspected of slaughtering f ewes on farms! in the vicinity) just above the Miki Miki Forks. The anmal put up a fight for an hour and a half before it was finally killed. '• It was bailed up by the dogs, but broke away from them to ground in In hole at the base of a large tree. With its back against a tree the boar de-’ fended itself ferociously, and used its tusks with such" effect that fyur of the dogs were ripped. A misdirected shot only served to aggravate the animal. The remaining dogs hung on valiantly, however, and finally Mr Bradbury was able-to spring in with a knife and stick the pig. ' It was found on examination that the boar was a splendid specimen, and an old warrior judging by the marks of teeth on his ears and other scars of former battles. His tusks were particularly well formed. The head cf the animal was brought into Masterton for mounting. Excellent sport with pigs is at present obtainable in the Tararuas the heavy snow having driven the animals down to low levels
