SPANISH RIOTS

DISCONTENT IN COUNTRY.

(United Press Association—By Electric

Telegraph—Copyright.)

MADRID, August. 17

The Aaana Government of Spain is now stronger than ever, but' its popularity will be short lived if its policy is not changed. Among the reasons for the discontent existing : is the Government’s generosity in a new Catalan Statute, which is being' passed through the■ Oortes, under Winch, the opponents of the proposal declare, the aid. to be given to the Oatallouian industries will enable them to flood the rest of Spain with their goods, often of inferior quality, and high in price.

The bakers also fear the Government’s policy, and some of the present Socialist Ministers wouCd welcome a more conservative Government. On the other hand, the Syndicalists and-the extreme Labour elements resent the Government’s restrictions, though observers consider that there now a surprising amount of freedom 'for incendiarism, and for mob violence. Finally the Azana Government has aroused the antagonism of the Church by the prohibition of nil teaching by the Monastic Orders, while forcing the religious schools to ©ontinuo work at least until the Government ha 9 completed the building of twenty-seven thousand schools to replace thorn') The revolt has given the Government another chance.”
