Mr Joseph Eutier managing director of the Kauri Timber Company, Limited, Melbourne, is visiting New Zealand and was a passenger from Christchurcij to Hokitika by last evening’s express.
At a meeting of the West Coast Rugby Union executive held last evening the secretary reported that he had got into communication with the Nelson Union/ suggesting a match with West Coast at Greymouth on Wednesday, August 24th prior to playing Bu’l'ler i l or the Seddon Shield at Westport oil August 27th, but up till last evening had received no reply. >
A retail price of about'9s a pound lids been paid for the first whitebait oi the season, which arrived in Christchurch, during the last few days from the West Coast. Only a few pounds of the fish have- so far come, to hand and they' have in moat cases been bought and sold privately. As usual, the first supplies were very keenly sought by local fishmongers.
Not for a long time have there been so few cases of infectious and other notifiable diseases reported in the Canterbury Health District as was the case in respect of the week which ended at noon on Monday. The total was five, whioh was throe fewer than the previous week. The cases were: Diphtheria, 3; tuberculosis, 2.
