COUNTY COUNCIL
FINANCE MEETING. TUESDAY, AUGUST 16. The Committee sat at 7.20 p.m. Present: Messrs' M. Keenan (Chairman), W; Jeffries, W. Searie and J. A. Murdoch, County Chairman. Apologies were received from Messrs W. A. Jamieson and J. Donovan. ■ The minutes of.-'-the previous meeting were confirmed - % ■ ; Mr Brown of Brown -and - Nilsson f sawmillers, waited on the meeting in regard to work at, Evans! road. Reports 'rfom Roadman '.Whitisk-ie and Overseer Millner- were' read. The matters for attention were referred to Messrs Jeffiea and Searle to inspect the following day.
The accounts for the month of July Were examined, and £1682 16s 6d* passed for payment. Of the total £725, principally unemployment expenditure has been paid. l '/ The Treasurer’s statement showed, receipts £3428 11s 6d; payments £3216 3s lOd; net credit at bank £Bl 5s 9d. It was further reported that overfifty per cent, of the general rateshad been paidj the' return being considered very satisfactory. -

OVERSEER’S MONTHLY REPORT. ' The Overseer 1 (Mr W. Millner) reported upon ■ the progress ; of work ir the various Ridings during the month of July. , , , . \
Northern Riding. Unemployed labour was usefully, engaged in clearing, dVains on the'Main Highway below Kumara Junction; clearing and cleaning water tables, reducing bumps on outer sides and, grubbing gorse from ;Kunrra Road; olearing 'and repairing Callaghan's Road; widening Main Highway between Stafford and Goldsbprough, clearing and 1 cleaning Stafford cemetery; clearing and'repairing German Gully track; assisting the bridge foreman H. Reynolds to construct a fourteen feet platform culvert on One Mile Road; filling gravel for repairs toArahura Valley and Bradley’s Road; constructing pipe : culverts on Spencer Road; assisting R. Bradley to drain, form and metal a portion of Spencer Road Extension; also widening and clearing inlets 1 ; anid outlets to bridges on One Mile Road.
Central Riding
■ Unemployed l labour was engaged in filling grave!‘for repairs’to Blue Spur, Gamelback, Municipal, Hokitika Flat. Whitcombe Valley, and Max 1 < Roads ;< approaches to bridge, KokataKi townshipi and’ Sunny- Bigfit l bridge ;■ also assisting the bridge Foreman H. Reynolds to reconstruct Muddy Greek bridge, McArthur Road; clearing encroaching growth on two corners of Municipal Road; continuing the road drain on the eastern side of Hokitika Flat Road; clearing and improving Whitcombe Valley Road beyond Died-ric-h’s Greek bridge y. .cleaning Cropps and Walls Road; cutting manuka for Kokatahi bridge protection; clearing portions of* Arthurstown Road; clearing, widening, and deepening the c-eek outlet at the Two Mile on the Main Highway, also starting the cleaning of the road drain from the creek outlet upwards. Holdtika-Hau Hau Road was cleared of growth and watertables cleaned for one mile in length; ,1 so the drain cleaned on the by-road behind Kanieri Tram Road. Portions of Upper Back Creek Road were cleared if growth, and the work of repairs will be in hand next week and continued to completion: Motor worn -holes' were repaired on South Hokitika Road and the removal of the high bank continued
at the-intersection, of South Ildkitika and Adairs Roads. -
Southern Riding.
Woolhouse Road was dragged to remove ruts from the ne\v metalling, the King drag drawn by No. 3 lorry being used for the purpose. Unemployed labour was engaged in filling gravel foi; repairs to Ruatapu and Waitaha Settlement Roads; continuing - Ruatapu Road diversion and bridge approaches; assisting Roadman Whitiskie with re--pairs to Inter Wanganui Roads; also dismantling a bridge on Johnny. Walk-; er Road for re-erection on the first crossing -on Petersen Road. Casual labour was engaged at Matainui in Completing the filling and approaches to Whale Creek pipe culvert, Wataroa Elat Road, also repairing bad holes i'v Wataroa Flat. Road. , Unemployed labour was engaged improving Okarito and Waiho Domains, and repairing Okarito ,Road and Three- Mile Track,

Lake Kanieri Road.
Motor woni holes were repaired for a distance oi seven miles, using' 58 cubic yards ■of - gravel. • In- addition five cubic yards of gravel were placed on the 36-inch concrete pipe, culvert at the two mile peg. Unemployed, labour was usefully - engaged in clearing- .35 chains of watertables; casual labour cleaned five chains. , Two small slips 'were removed from the watertables beyond Crayfish Creek bridge. Uemi ployed labour was employed , clearing, growth from .both' - sides ,of the road ns far as the one mile peg. r( . ..
Upper Kokatahi Road. Repairs were effected to depressions on the road surface for one mile in length, absorbing 10 cubic yards of gravel. ? The Bridge Foreman,; iH, Reynolds, - assisted -by unemployed .labour, • tarred the surface of the traJjic planking on Nos. 1 and- 2 Duck Creek bridge. Unemployed labour was engaged clearing growth no both sides of the road for 30 chains in length.
Lower Kokatahi Road. Lower Kokatahi road was repaired for a distance of. 10 miles, absorbing 85 cubic yards of gravel. Several short sections were lightly coated with gra-; vel, and 60 cubic yards of gravel -dumped on the roadside for 'future .re--1 pairs. The Bridge F.oreman/ H. Reyols, removed and replaced 10 16x8x4 l decking on Kokatahi bridge! Unemi ployed labour cleaned tile road drains -for 30 chains in length, and' alnlost'compieted the clearing and cleaning of Klines Outlet drain, 20 chains in length.
Detour Road
Minor repairs were effected to the road surface ; ‘ using 8' cubic ' yards cl gravel. ... • A report was received in regard 1 1 unemployed labourers leaving work before the appointed time. The Qvmr seer was instructed to ‘ dispense with any man who did not put in the re-: quired time, and to take firm action in the matter. Notification' was received of a grant, of £650, £2 for £l, for Petersen roadp It was resolved to refer the matter; to the Council, as the contribution would be substantial. , . ■ i It was resolved to notify J. W. Hewer to remove unauthorised obstacles to traffic on La Fontaine road.
