NAVAL DEFENCE
OF AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH PRESENT SYSTEM INADEQUATE. \ (Australian Press Association.) (Received this day at 9.30 a.m.) SYDNEY, August 16. The “Herald’s” Melbourne correspondent says that while Mr Stanley Bruce is in London as resident Minister for the Commonwealth, it is likely that he will discuss with the British Government and the British Admiralty the question of the naval defence of the Commonwealth. It is known that the views of highly placed naval officers in Australia on the inadequacy of Australian naval defences have impressed the Ministry and early action may be expected to raise the present low watermark -of naval defence.
The speech of Rear-Admiral Hyde is believed to express the views of other members oP the Naval Board. They fpel that the naval forces of the Empire have fallen to a dangerously low level.
