Sir K'ingsford Smith’s Southern Cross .was one of the machines.menaced. Smith stpod guai’d with a. loaded rifle forcing . the driver itp sheer his car away from the Southern /Cross. The famous aviator led the subsequent chase after .the \yrecker, and though the cars Were .travelling sixty miles an hour and fired shot after .shot at the tyres the racd .continued untif ' the fugitive stopped, and-the man submitted quietly.
