DULLER DEFEATS COAST. BY 2? POINTS TO NIL. WESTPORT, August 14, West Coast Rugby reps. Were beaten by Duller in the second home-and-home fixture played for the Randle Cup oar Saturday at Victoria'S 1 ’ Squafe. The match was witnessed by a good sized crowd. The fact that the teams would meet for the Seddbn Shield in the event of Nelson benig defeated toy the holders, later in the season, enhanced the interest in the game.
The play, at times, reached a high standard, but was punctuated by patches of scrappy play. The home side blearly deserved their win and the final score of 27 points to nil wate a fair indication of their superiority. Duller found the weak spots in the visiting defence atfer the interval, and right up to the closing stages, held 1 the upper hand. The Buller backs played well, with the exception of Higgins, who had a tendency to hesitate and pass erratically and on. many occasions failed to accept good transfers, with the result that Holder and two good wings were not given full opportunity. The home forwards won nearly every scrum, and Reid’s work enabled the backs to get plenty of . the bail. Graham was easily thie better of the frillbacks, his vis-a-vis, Colling, being unsteady and not reliable. Schroder, Gilbert and Martyn were toy no means conspicuous, but brought off one or two good movements, combining well and handling with precision. However, they lacked penetration and at no stage were what could be termed really dangerous. The Coast forwards were alii solid grafters, tout were up against a far superior eight. Jones is a good type of loose forward, and with Growcott, Hughes and Deere were prominent in many rushes. An outstanding feature was the close passing of the Buller toacks and forwards, the side at times producing nippy and clever work. Davidson, the Coast half, behind a beaten pack, was at a pronounced disadvantage, but he got through his work with distinction. He ■suffered an injury to his shoulder, and was>iobliged to retire before full time. Fong- and Diedrich were useful, and the former was responsibdl for some good individual work. The, Buller team underwent two changes. Jones had not recovered sufficiently to take his place on the wing, and Jack was absent from the forward line, bein replaced by Doherty. The game on the whole waig devoid of thrills, hut possessed many bright features. The Coast team was very disappointing and in " the Hatter stages when Buller simply romped over them, their display was a long way off suggesting that they have any chance of lifting the Seiddon Shield in the event of the,.sides meeting again. Buller set up a fast invasion in the early stages in Coast territory and Graham, before the game was very old, opened the scoring with a penalty goal. The next Buller score came from a deteiminyd
forward movement and Doherty getting possession transferred to McNeight, who got over. Graham missed the kick. Prior* to ha]f time a back and forward rush ended in Gilsenen adding the second try and the sides changed over with Buller enjoying a nine point lead. Buffer forwards were getting the hall from nearly all the scrums, and from one of these Higigins received and sent Gireer over for a good try. Holder failed with the kick. The next try came from a movement initiated by Reid. All the hacks handled and \ Higgins finished a good concerted attack by scoring. Holder converted. The home side were now having matters all their own way, and two tries were added in quick succession by Stewart and'Holder, the latter convert‘ing both. FinAl score: Bulldr 27, Coast 0. •' Mr Dalton was referee.

* BLENHEIM, August 13. After being top dogs, Marlborough cracked up In the second spell in their match against North Otago, and were beaten by 16 points to 14. Canterbury Rugby representatives beat South Canterbury by 11 points to five to-day in the first Ranfurly Shield challenge match of the season. However, the form of the winners was by mo means up to Ranfurly Shield standard. The forwards were hard working, but the backs were disappointing, chiefly owing to the lack of sharpness between the half-back and the fiveeighths. Canterbury relied on spoiling work of the forwards. T/here were 13 stoppages for minor injuries in the course of play. teams were:—

Andrews charged through in a loose rush with the ball, and suddenly changed his direction to cut right through the defence, and he scored near the posts. - Roberts’ kick failed. South Canterbury 5 It. had befell far from .a spectacular game. 'South Canterbury were beaten in the formal scrums, but excelled in informal rucking. Their backs 'lacked the constructive scoring plan, hut took advantage quickly of their opponents mistakes. Canterbury's attack lacked penetration, and generally the play of the side (was disappointing.
