The extended period of fine frosty weather has had-its effect on Lake KanietV the source of the' 1 Borough water supply; and also 'the ■■■• power scheine, for. 'town lighting and driving power for i the'>Rimu> Elat "dfedge.' Of late, the Kanieij Electric Ltd; has been improving the main., in/let, for their water supply, and the work has been carried put, at a very opportune time to meet the present situation, It hnß been possible to lower the present intake .considerably- with the:''result that. even with the unusually low lake level, adequate water is available it is estimated for another two months of drought. In regard to the Borough ..water supply, the conditions are not ( so favourable, so far as tlh'e direct, supply from the hake is concerned. However, in the ply from th'c Company’s water . race taken from the penstock at Kanierj Porks, there is a'considerable supply, and; the town supply is adequate. . The average depth' of water in thei reservoir, last month was about eight, feet which was satisfactory.. There has beten a decline this month,, lut with ordinary care on the part of users the supply should be sufficient to avoid serious inconvenience with rer gafd to the direct'supply from the lake,. the officers of .the Company have suggested a/n improvement in the intake. It has been possible owing to tlie low level of the water to lower the pipe in the filter, and gain about fifteen inches. This would be a. considerable advantage, and the Borough Cbuncil on Fridasy night in thanking the' Company for its advice and preferred help, authorised the. Overseer to have tho work proceeded with with all despatch. This is now; being done, and when completed this -week should improve greatly the. direct service. The town reticulation has been giving a )ittlle extra trouble of llate, due it is considered to the sustained frosts, but on the whole an excellent service has been (maintained. The. town water supply is now indispensible and the Council is wise in ~its. decision to use every effort to maintain the service to the best advantaeg. The help of the Kanieri Electric Ltd. >at -this juncture is a vety pleasing gesture, and the outcome will be a further improved water supply service for th)e town.
