BOROUGH COUNCIL.

HOKITIKA MONTHLY MEETING. The Hokitika Borough Council met last evening there being present, the ‘Mayor (Mr G. A. Perry), and Councillors H. W. Heenan, T. W. Duff, J. King, E. TeicheJmann, D. P. Stuart, A. C. Armstrong, D. J. Evans, A. It. Elcoek. *

The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed and the outward correspondence approved. Inward correspondence was dealt with as follows: Rev. H. J. W. Knights, wrote thanking the Council for electing him as a member of the Westland Hospital Board.—Received. N.Z. Refrigerating Co. intimated that nine sheep were delivered into Hokitika during June. The Jubilee Institute for the Blind, Auckland, wrote pointing out the various articles manufactured at the Institute, and asked for support in their purchase as the Institute’s revenue was considerably reduced owing to thu depression.—Received. The District Engineer, Public Works Greymouth, asking that labour costs be indicated separately in claims for plant charges.—Received. 1 Mr N. 0. Fairlie, Rolleston Street, and eight other petitioners asked that a street light be placed at the corner of Rolleston and Park Street.—Referred to the Public Works Committee. Mr Thornhill Cooper, Junr., rondo the same request, the matter being referred to the Public Work# Commit* tee,

Mr T. Cagney, wrote pointing out the unsanitary condition of the Brittan Street drain on the east side between Stafford Street and Hampden Street and asked the Council have the matter attended to, and, if possible piped.—Referred to Works Committee. Takapuna Borough Council, intimated that they had forwarded an emphatic protest to the Prime Minister against the action of the Government in not availing itself of the prevision of the New South Wales Interest Reduction Act, 1931, in view of the fact that some months ago both the Crown Law Office and the order Department insisted on local bodies availing themselves of the reduction, and asking that a protest be forwarded to the Prime Minister—Received. Mr W. H. Stopforth, llevell Street, asked for permission to erect suspension verandah from his new shop in Re veil Street—Granted. Mr J. Gardiner, made application for consent to plan and subdivide hoicmgli sections in Dalton Street. Approved. The Hokitika -branch of the Plunket Society wrote stating that it was desirous of obtaining a -site for a bui.ding within the borough, and suggested a portion of Macandrew -Square. Or. King suggested a portion -of the police camp might be more, serviceable being in a very central, position. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Town Clerk to go further into Or. King’s proposal. The treasurer reported that receipts since the last meeting totalled £937 3s 4d and .payments £976 4s 9d. The district fund account showed a debit of £904 4s 7d. Accounts amounting to £llO2 13s 4d were -passed for payment. Stock slaughtered at the borough abattoirs during July was as follows: Sheep '286, bullocks 57, calves 35, heifers 18, lambs 14, cows 4, pigs 2. One bullock was condemned. Regarding the water supply the Borough foreman (Mr Chesternmn) said that it was just as good a 8 ever it was. The pipe line was only one inch below the wa-ter, giving the Borough an adequate supply for at least another fortnight should the present -dry spell continue. Tlie* Kanieri Electric 'Ltd, had offered to give assistance. It was decided that Council gratefully accept this offer.

The, foreman reported that two chains of footpath were gravelled in Park Street between Davie 'and IRolleston streets. The Rolleston street drain between Weld and Gibsons Quay was completed, <two and a half chains of eighteen inch pipes being .laid, and the drain being filled in and sides of the street graded. Two chains of six inch earthenware, pipes were laid in Hampden street on the south side between Brittan and iSale streets and the sides of the street* graded. A portion of Livingston street drain slipped in and this was cleaned out land the crossing under Stafford street repaired. Two new pipes were put in the water main in Sale street between Hampden and Stafford ■streets. The water pipes in Jollie street were lowered about 'four feet where the hill is being excavated. The wives gave away on the eight inch main in Hampden street at the corner of Sale street requiring ten pairs of bands to repair it. Water service was put in at Mr R. Renton’s in Sade street. The sexton had one of his fingers broken at the beginning of the month and J. Cutbush acted as sexton when required. The | unemployed were occupied on various places, chiefly at the railway station where a good number were employed during the month, and at the aerodrome, where a good number are still employed Grubbing k still continued on the botanical reserve, and on Jollie street hill, while some are at the abattoirs, Cass (Square, and the harbour. The reserve on upper Sewell street was fenced, new wire and posts being requiied, and the fence on the south iskle of the recreation ground was renewed. A quantity if gravel was screened in tn L pit in Sale street and distributed on the streets in various parts of the town. The water required a lot of attention this month, l-aks being numerous, probably from the severe frosts experienced this month. The water averaged 8 feet for the month.
