It is at least satisfactory to find from the recently published statement by the Prime Minister, that the anticipated revenue is coming to hand sat sfactorily. At the moment, when the Government has. before it a further contribution, to proposed Economies, this is perhaps opportune. Doubtless the economies proposed 1 are of a. drastic character, including the wiping out or amalgamation of public service l departments. In that way there would be reductions of the public service and many more added to the unemployed. As it is, at the moment, owing to the shortage of money in the public works fund, orders have been issued to retrench this month most of the sing'iA men on. public works. This in itself will throw many more on to unemployment, and it will not be surprising if the registered number, advances substantially. It should be realised now that this is not a sound policy, for such waste is involved wlieie seasoned labour Ts removed from useful and necessary work-.’to be, placed on casual work merely, created to find the men relief work adjacent to their dwellings. This makes!lift work is not going to help the country towards air early recovery, and the sooner a policy is shaped with a more remedial tend, the better null be the outlook. It is probable that the Government is marking time at the moment hoping for the best outcome from Ottawa. Much is bound up in the issues of the Imperial Conference, and it is hinted that New • Zealand is to derive some benefit. If this proves to be so, tinea the renters I utlook will he improved. At the nioa :it, AT ew Zealand is producing, many p-oducta in great quwwj tity, and if the market can ho improved, the advantage will] be so much estra gain in rot urn to the producers.
The Dominion is therefore ready .to reap an immediate advantage-' as soon as, prices adrance. This is.,' an encouraging outlook at the pres mt, and it ,is to he hoped the proru mg expectations wiJil be reads, d 'ft lly. Mr Forbes in his most recent statement says: “We hope to get through the coming -s'essioil without having to impose extra taxation.’’ He j added, too, he was much more confident; about the futuro,: and that there she wild be no niore need for emergency leg' jVation. This; is probably the best autlioi ritative news the country has had for! some time. Mr Forbes .was not so definite about unemployment funds heir g equal to- the strain, yet if the Government revises the -schemes in- force jwitly a view to getting better value fioam the outgoings, the. general situatiofi would improve by reason cf the bdfcter return‘for the expenditure; Altogether, the outlook continues to improve, and gives point to the opinions expressed in different walks of life, /that the depression has been bottomed, and the rebound is taking place. 'Looking to the cable news day .by day we see the world of sport is. most prominent., It is not an unhealthy sign fvo see go •much attention devoted- to t-lfe jirogi.-ies:: to sport,' seeing that it is sjome-' indication of the. temper of ‘ nations at a time when, in thie ordinary, 1 course more attention would be given to more Serious affairs' of public life. ! -'
