SCHOOL COMMITTEE
HOKITIKA DISTRICT HIGH SCHOOL. The Hokitika -District High School /JoNiunittee met last evening, there being present Messrs A. C. Armstrong, J. Conning, W. E. Richards, H. W. R. Sweney, W. H. Shannon, A. McDougall, R. Redder, F. Chesterinan, J. J. Breeze, junr., and the Rector (Mr J. L. Menzies). The Agricultural Department wrote offering /to give apiary instruction. 'lnc Rector, however, thought it would be inopportune to accept this at this/juncture, as the year’s curriculum bad been planned out, but it would be most acceptable at a later juncture. It was decided that the matter be considered further. A letter was -received from Mr Bigneil, a member of the "Education Board, thanking the €ommitte e for its expression of sympathy in his recent bereavement. Ml* J. Stephenson, Fields Instructor to the Department of Agriculture, wrote recommending improvements in the way of drainage, etc., to the area recently placed under the Committee’s-control. Mr /Stephenson offered -to give his advice, on any point required. . It was decided to reply thanking; hintfor his offer, and to proceed with work, upon the area. //.-
The dental nurse, M'ss James, reported a total of 740 operations, children of the Hokitika, Convent, Humphreys, Woodstock, Iva-nieri'and Kaihinu schools being attended to. A letter was received from , Air T.. Nuttall the Committees representative on /the Primary Schools’ . Association,, op matters appertaining to the; Association. It was decided to reply thanking him for his full services in the interests of this Committee.
The Rector reported that the present roll number was : -Secondary, 104, primary 340; average attendance, secondary ■lb. B, primary 322. During the. month the school was visited by Mr H. Williams, a former, member of ths* staff. Two -primary school rugby teams played matches against Grey Technical, Hokiti. ka losing each by a narrow margin. The A grade basketball finished third in the competition, while the B team was lead--, ing in its grade. On August. 13, the. senior rugby team • would travel • to; Christchurch -to play a match against West Christchurch District High School. A
The report was adopted. -; In connection with the proposed visit of school children to the Christchurch Winter Show, it was . reported that there would be no party - attending ironi the Hokitika D.H.S. on account of the difficulty of sending a. lady teacher in charge of the girls. The only official party visiting Christchurch would b s the football team in ,'.charge- ,of the Rector. Any pupils attending the Show, would therefore travel independently of the -school and not under the. supervision of any teacher'. .
