He was oeaten by the German, ~ Arthur Jonath, whose time, 10.6 seconds, was me oest ot the clay in the 101) metres heats and equaled the Olympic record. jhord Burgitiley and the (Australian, Golding, ran. second and third respectively in their heat of the 400 hundred "metres hurdles. Both qualified for the second trials.
.Jcs-ph Hea'.y, of United States, broke the Olympic record for 400 metres hurdles, when he won his heat in 62.2 seconds.
