TRAM CONDUCTOR’S THEFT.

WELLINGTON,, July 30. ' A tram conductor, James Shaw Revan Rioe, was sentenced by Mr Page, S.M., to a month aud a day on a charge of stealing a block of tramway universal concession tickets, valued at £3 10s, from the. box of a fellow employee. The case against another conductor, jointly charged, was dismissed.
In imposing sentence, the Magistrate; remarked that the sentence of a month : entitled the prisoner to appeal only ' on the question of 'law. If, however., A the sentenced were increased, a genter;al appeal could be made. ‘ ; Counsel for Rjce said lie. would prefer the extension of one day. Security for appeal was fixed at £25. -A . "f-'C. The Magistrate remarked, before con- i, victing the accused, on the serious aspect of such eases, in that they threw a suspicion on other employees, and as in this case on a man whom he /- tliought was quite innocent of the charge.
