The delegates attended Lord Besshorough’s garden party in the afternoon and then packed their Lags tor •innumerable holiday jrejorta. Several of the Britishers, also Mr Gullet. (Australia), have gone fishing to the lakes and streams of Gatineau. Others have gone to country clubs, and notably $ party of seventy .guests to a luxurious log cabin called “Luverfe” which is o, country club on a millionaire basis, mid-way between Ottawa and Montreal, and which has facilities for golf, tennis, riding and swimming, . The delegates attended a gala comcert by nll-Canadian artists, the Lems including Alfred Hill’s (New Zealand) Poi Song; and Percy Grainger’s (Australia) Folk Songs. Two special trains will fake the delegates to Niagra on August 4, proceeding on tor.the ceiemonial opening of the Welland Canal'on August 6; this being part of the great scheme for the exteiLsiqil .of the St. Lawrence Water-way into the. great lakes,, which America and Canada have jointly agreed to undertake over a pciod of ten years, but it is uncertain whether the U.S.A, Congress will approve, for economic reasons.
The delegates will see the world’s largest fresh water steamer, the “Lemoyne” paiss through new locks outwards, carrying a record cargo of grain. They will return to ' Ottawa on August 8, to resume the Conference.
The newspaper here, which give prominence to the- ejection of the Washington war .veterans, - make no (reference however to Canada’s unemployment problem, which is acute. Threatened unemployed demonstrations, by processions converging on Ottawa, did n6t eventuate, as police patrols prevented the marchers from entering, the Capital. There are strong police guards round the Chateau Laurier to divert traffic from the neighbouring streets after sunset, following complaints, particularly from Britishers .tjhat-,..-noise interfered with their sleep, and their tempers are flaying under the strain. Australian and New Zealand delegates, while fully sharing the great pressure of work, are still finding an occasional respite) Mr Bruce is going golfing. Mrs Bruce, Who suffered from ptomaine in Auckland, and. who refrained from participation in the ship-board life is now keenly golfing. Mr Coates presented New Zealand’s case in an able manner, and i-s now indulging in tennis. Mi’s Coates is a most popular hostess. Mr Downie Stewart, who. celebrated his ! fifty-third birthday yesterday, received many presentations and congratulations. He is actively participating in all the conference’s business, gving a strong lead as chairman ot the Customs Committee. Miss Stewart is constantly and assiduously attentive to his welfare. Mr D. Jones and Mr Napier are well satisfied with the meat and fruit result.
Mr Gtiodfellow is still pursuing liis aims regarding a butter quota.
