NEW NAVAL HYD HOG RAPHEI'. charting the seas. \ . . LONDON, July 25. The .Admiralty announce that Captain John A. Edgell, 0.8. K., at present Assistant Hydrographer 'of "the Navy, has 'been appointed Hydro-’ grapher of the Navy, in ' succession to v ice-’Admiral Henry P. Douglas,' C-8., C.M G., to date October 1, 1932. The post of Hydrographer is one which interests not only the Royal Navy, biit the navies and mercantile mai’ini<s of all countries, and in fact all who us e • the isea 'for business or pleasure. engaged on hydrographic duties almost continuously since 1897. Ho "a? iSuperintendent of Charts in' 1910-14. In the War he was commended and promoted to captain for surveying service on th e -staff of the Admiral at the Dardanelles, and after being Director of the Naval Meteorological Service in 1917 he joined the staff of the Admiral Commanding the Dover Patrbl. For hi. work in preparing routes and fixing navigation marks and the like for the raiid on Zeebrugge in 1918 he was made IC.M.G- 'His duties since the war have included the command of the survyi\v ships Mutine and Ormonde. Vice. Admiral Douglas is connected with several of the ilearned societies, and is the investor of many appliance!' in use in the Navy at the present time.
Captain Edgelf is 51, and entered the Navy in 1894. He first took up hydrographic work as sub-lieutenant of the Triton iin 1902. Ii the war he commanded the surveying ships Heaity and Endeavour, and was 'Superintendent of Charts. Hi,s subsequent commands have included the sdrveyhg. .ships Me lin, Moresby (in Australia). Mid Endeavour. Recent’y ho represented England at the meeting of the International -Hydrogi-pivc Bureau at Monaco.
