As a sequel to fye unemployed demonstratjqiij |lii the grounds of Parliament Housfebfm .September 16, George Budd ,ari<J ji'fijinest Frederick Thomson were tried ja|? the Supreme Court to-day on a chiargk fof publishing a defamatory libel of Police Inspector Lander. The alleged' libel was contained in a pamphlet entitled “War,” and distribute ed at a meeting held in Auckland in October, and it referred to Inspector. Lander, as “a- liar and perjurer, when he i|’au not armed whi.e on duty, i during§|he disturbance.” After .(Ifteetives had given evidence, counsel produced a photograph taken during the disturbance. Both detectives said .they.| considered Inspector Lander, w.ho: qould .be; seen in the photograph, was npte.armbjl. The. man indicated by counsel hot Lander. Counsel 'R WPIS c ' ear a m ’ s " take had beefi made by the .accused. 'They had se|m the photograph arid had believed thaffthe man carrying, the baton was Lafider.
