RECOMMENDATION FOR STATION REEFTON THOUGHT BEST SITE. WELLINGTON, July 26. Reef ton is suggested by the Broadcasting Coverage Commission as tlie best site on the West Coast for a station to meet West Coast needs. The repoit .• states that the West Coast district,: which is an. extensive ' one is badly served by its 5 regional Station, 3 YA, Christchurch, receiving a poor daylight signal from both 3YA and 2YA. This district, will however, ,?6|nefit to ;at considerable .extent in ‘daylight 'ievice by the increased powder. of arid willj-tunder the proposech.lfchenie, receive an' acceptable night signal fiom AY A: and, to a less extent, from IYA. . *
“If a relay station is ultimately found to be essential,” 'says the report “it is suggested that Reef ton would be the most practicable 'site from which to give a non-fading night signal to the principle centres of population provided a sufficiently low frequency - were used. Neither Westpor t nor Greymouth appears to be capable of giving a non-fading service to both centres.
“As in the case of Hawke’s , Bay and Gisborne, an alternative method would be to place comparatively 'low power transmitters at Greymouth and Westpoi-t, but this, method, although giving greater field strength at the centres of population, is not ’so attractive iupther respects as; one high grade station' capable of satisfactorily serving the needs of the district as a whole.”
