OTTAWA BUSINESS

CANADA AND BRITAIN, [AN EXCHANGE OF MARKETS, (United Press Association—By. Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received this day at 11 a.in.) OTTAWA, July 26. An authoritative survey of Canada’s Conference programme, regarding which the utmost' optimism persists, indicates that she is in an excellent positioh to make a fair deal with Britain,' balancing the concessions given with grants received. C&hada’s position regarding wheat is not yet finalised' hut it is considered likely that she will he. content- to range herself with Australia in urging Britain to show a more favourable purchasing attitude to 1 Canadiafn and Australian that to Russian wheat. Canada is a’so vitally iriterested i n protecting the ;timber trade against Russia’s dumping, especially as the recent United States’ tariffs aggravated the slump in the Canadian lumber industry. The United States’ newspapers predict that the result of Ottawa -arrangement to Canada will reduce anthracite coal purchased frojn the United States ■under the plan whereby Canada is seeking a market for timber in Britain in exchange tor purchasing larger quantities of British coal. The British delegation resents’ the imputation by some Canadian newspapers that team-work at Ottawa is imperilled by former individual views on the subject of free trade and preferences. Delegates have adopted a national outlook rather than ail . Empire outlook, which x frankly admits that the position is hopeless unless all are united, and can agree on a policy of mutual helpfulness. MEETING OF'COMMITTEES. OTTAWA, July 26. The Currency Committee met, and appointed Mr Stevens (Candian Minister of Trade) as chairman. It decided that all delegation leaders should, on Thursday, review the present currency and exchange position of their respect'v countries, subsequently referring questions to special sub-committees for a preliminary examination. 1 The Meat Committee held its first meeting, and discussed the world situation. 1 1 ■
