PLANS TOO COSTLY
THE DUNEDIN POST OFFICE COMPLAINTS OF EXTRAVAGANCE DUNEEIN, July 22. Though the master builders and contractors generally have every desire for the Government to proceed yyith the erection of Dunedin’s Post Off-ce, many members felt that the present plans and specifications represent; the most extravagent form of expenditure. One influential member said it had been discovered that the two top stories were to be finished with expensive stone, - While it was contended -that reinforced concrete embellished with coloured cement would make -an v even stronger structure and one equally at* tractive to the public. .Some members w’ere of opinion that the two uppermost stories could be deleted from the plans altogether, but even if this were not done it was still contended that the cost of the building could be reduced-to £IOO,OOO by .simple eliminating extravagant features of the specifications.' No one wanted to spend £300,000 on a port office at the present time. At least £56,000 could be cut out without altering the plans.
