’There was an explosion this afternoon at the local Gas Works. It was due to >a leak in the pump which forces tlq, gas from the retorts into the holder.

■ The explosion blow out a twenty-five foot brick wall. The leak of g«s filled the pump room, and became ignited from a nearby pilot light. No one was hurl, but the firemen had a difficult task to extinguish the. gas flames round the pump.

All other moans proved .ineffective, but wet clay availed. It blocked the vah-a, thus cutting off the flames. There was little done, except that .to the wfeV 1. y, V ■ .
