At 'tlie final trials of .the American women' Olympic swimmers at Jones Beach, Long Island, two world’s record’s were broken. Miss Helen Madison swam the 400 metres' in dniin 32 2-5 sec. Miss ‘Eleanor Holm did the hundred metres back stroke • in 1 lmin 18 1-osecs, thus bettering Miss Bonnie Mealing’s (u.S.A.) record by 2 2-osec.
The team was selected on the basis of the day’s trials. It is considered a very strong one. - .'The leading members •’ include, Mum Madison (both 400 and 100 metres), Miss Ho'im (backstroke), Miss Margaret Hoffman, and Miss Anne .Govednik' (200 metres), - also a number of fancy divers. At Cincinatti, Ciarepce Grabb’is perforihance' iti tile' 400 metres was a feature of the men's Olympic i swimming try-outs.
