AEROPLANE TESTED
SUCCESSFUL, FLIGHT. (Per Press Association— Copyright.) TIMARU, July 12. The testing of a local’y-built aeroplane caused great interest at the Timaru Airport ot Saltwater Greek. AJarge number of people witnessed the try-out, , . The iocal staff of New. Zealand Air- ' ways, Ltd., has been busily engaged for some time past constructing the new machine and the initial . flight crooned their efforts with. success. The -new ’plane is a Simmonds-Spartan, and is of the same type as the one which Squadron-Leader has been piloting in Timaru AfpE,some time. The machine has embodied in it many new" improvements.- • It is -a. threeesnter type, there being accommodation for two. passengers in the front ■cockpit, and a seat .for the pilot behind ■The passengers'.are., protected from the weather by coupe 1 top. The best kpowp general purpose type of wing sigetiohi-fo :-be procured, namely, the OIMfEtY., is embodied in the machine, whifih is "certainly outstanding from an efficiency point Of. view. It is fitted ivith''dual controls and is of British vdesjTO^andXiujit..entirely of British a Hermes 100 horsepower engine and has also a stream-lined~head-rest with a small, locker at the rear of tiie pilot’s cockpit. The old machine; piloted by Mr W. E. ’ Clarke (who supervised the codstruction of the machine) took the air together with the- new machine, piloted by Squadron-Leader White.
