WHITE BUTTERFLY AND MOTH. ; bill: ■/ HASTINGS, >lu'y 6. ' ■Considerable' ' -preparations''- again:; t the expected recurrence of the white butterfly and diamond-backed • moth pests are now being made in Hawk-ss Ray, and when the spring comes there two insects will, find fully armed forces opposing theft-* A partite •, wasp wns liberated last; year to prey upon the white butterfly, and it is expected that the results as shown when'spring arrives will be very satisfying. | According to Dr A. H. Cockayne, however, the diamond-backed moth is agjreat -menace. It is very tiny compared with the butterJy, and both its smallness and its dark grey colouring make it nearly invisible,, except, frofn a distance of a foot or two, . ■ ’An amateur gardener.- describes hav-
•ing made comparative observations of the moth and the butterfly, particularly with regard to their respective diets in a "flower.- garden. -His; fhbt angry- conclusion ■ was that, -stocks . wer e : being eaten by ' the butterflies, which were fluttering about in - hundreds. •* C’ld'er watching, however, showed that it was the moths that were eating the stocks. (Swiftly they stripped .every shred 'of foliage from the stalks, and the peculiar feature .of the affair was that they seemed to -care .for nothing else amonga large variety c: flower plants. The butterfly appeared to be doing little damage, though it was wreaking ruin among vegetables. (Parasites for both insects iare being carefully developed and others are being sought. Control stations for the breeding and liberation of the parasites have been .established in various parts of this district, and the parasites will be liberated among cabbage crops in the early spring.
