The Guardian And Evening Star, with which is incorporated the West Coast Times TUESDAY, JULY 12, 1932. LAUSANNE.

It is gratifying news that has como to hand of the-.success that has attended the conference that has bgen sitting at Lausanne seeking a : settlement of the grave reparations question. There have been many differences- of opinion among the delegates of the various nations ( and it seemed almost certain at one period .of the conference' that the efforts made to br.ng about a settlement, 'would. prove of no avail. It is due to the untiring efforts of the British Prime Minister, Mr Ramsay that the ultimate success has been achieved. He has . been working unceasingly in his efforts to ! smooth away the many points of difference that had cropped up, until, as a result of his work, the differences have _ been ultimately smoothed out and the parties have been able to come to a. definite agreement. The result arrived at by many compromises has appealed to have given general satisfaction in the countries affected. Of course there will be many differences of opinion voiced as to the effect on each particular country, and the view that one or othei party' lias received more advantage than the other, but it appears to be‘generally accepted on bfba'd lines that the agreement reached will have fat reaching advantages of a world -wide nature, and will once and for all do away .with the constant bickerings and differences that have been repeated time and again, whenever, the question came’up for'’’discusi&m. Is*ow that, a definite solution of the question has been reached there shbulcl be a possibility of the nations settling down to. make every endeavour to improve •the general conditions of each country and so enable the work of rehabiliatjpn |to proceed rapidly, and so assist' in the regeneration of Europe. ' That the conference has ultimately proved so successful Is indeed good news, and the result, should have a very far reaching effect on the present world conditions, and he’p to give that trend of stability and confidence- that there is such a need of at the present juncture,' - -
