SEQUEL TO COAL STRIKE

BRUSSELS, July QO.
Several were killed and many were injured in a Communistic riot at Charleroi, following on a coalminers’ strike. The : rioters set fire to the residence of the owners of one of the biggest factories in Charleroi. Tliew - they entered a crowded' cinema, brandishing firearms and creating a panic. Casualties occurred when the police endeavoured to eject them from the district. Terror stricken, the province of Hainaut is now almost in a state of siege. ,l! The tramcars were stopped by.j,-,at-tacks on the drivers, and also by, women lying on the - lines. Police equipped with machine-guns have been sent to intercept the. strikers, who are marching on to Brussels and are endeavouring to foment -Igetiy era! disturbances-. . : '

The Federal Court sentenced thivb teen Communists to a total ,of fiftyfour years on charges of plotting/ dynamite bridges and canals, and of training bohibin-g squads for civil war.
The prosecution declared that, despite many, confiscations, thousands of home-made grenades and large quantities >of explosives were -still in the panels of Communist bodies.
