ARBITRATION COURT

WESTPORT, July 8,

Associated with ; His Honour, Mr Justice Fraser at a sitting of the Arbitration Court, held yesterday were Mr A. L. Monteith (workers’ representative) and Mr W. Cecil' Prime employers’ representative). John Ritchie for whom Mr P. J. O’Regan appeared; claimed compensation from the Westport Coal Company (Mr, A. A, Wilson) in respect to -an accident which betel him in the Denniston Mine. The statement of claim was to the effect that jJliaintiff was an employee of the defendant Coy'., on March 4, 1931, and whilst engaged at his employment, was struck on the head by a prop, as a /result of which he was disabled and was since unable to resume work.

His Honour, after reviewing the evidence at lengthy said plaintiff was entitled to 50 weeks conpensation, which amounted to £lB4 15s lees the. amount already paid; £176 16s 7d, which 'left a. balance of £7 16s 7d. Judgment would he given for plaintiff for £62 13s 7d, which sum included £55 paid to Mr O’Regan, £7 7s costs and witnesses’ expenses.

A case, Alexander Shewan v. West-port-Stcckton Coal Coy., was adjourned to Christchurch for hearing. The cat-res of John Morgan v. West-port-Stocktou Coal Coy., and Elizabeth Many Soares v. Oparara Shipping Coy Were settled out of Court. ,
