SCHOOL COMMITTEE
HOKITIKA DISTRICT HIGH ■SCHOOL. The Hokitika District High School Committee- met last evening when there were present Messrs A. C. Armstrong (chairman), J. J. Breeze, F. Chesterman, W. H. Shannon, A., McDougaill, W. E. Richards, R. Redder and J. Conn ng (hon. s.cretjry), and the Rector (Mr J. L. Menzies). A motion of sympathy with Mr Bignell. member, of .the Education Board, in his recent bereavement was passed by the, Committee. The secretary said that no reply had been received from Mr Stevenson regarding inspection of the school reserve and putting forward a scheme for its improvement. .. v ' The resignation of Miss N. Reid was received w.th sincere regret, it being decided to place on record the Committee’s appreciation of- her services, both in tlie school and in the school’s outside activities..,,; • 'i '
The Health, Department .advised that children five years of aige-'c. would 'be eligible for dental clinic treatment, provided the regulations were complied with. u •
The chairman said it was strange that they should take them for o’.inio treatment, and not for school tuition,
The Mananui; School Committee wrote inquiring re dental-clinic treatment for its pupils. It was decided That' the matter be held over, Payments of allocat’ons for ol’nio treatment were received from the Kan* ieri, Humphreys and Convent Schools, Nurse James reported having per* formed 933 operations, the total, attendances being 178. Children from the Hokitika, Convent, Kaihinu, Kanieri and Woodstock Schools had been treated during June, there being eight new patients, while -78 patients had been re-examined.
Accounts totalling £8 13, 5 6d were passed for payment. . , .
TT.r Breeze, for the visiting committee, reported on the conditions of the school g’.ound and made several recommendations. Seeing that the Committee received a small annual rental from the football field he suggested that that amount be earmarked for improvements thereon. The recommendations were referred to thei chairman and secretary, and t-he report was adopted. - ■ The Rector reported the secondary roll at the end of June was 58 boys, 48 girls, 106 total, the average attendance 98.3, while in the primarydepartment, the roll was 187 hoys, 157 girls,' 344 total, the average being 300.3. He regretted, that Miss N. Reid had resigned, and paid tribute to her services, adding'that she would be missed. Prior to her departure she as met by the..children and-th®; staff, each of whom had presented her with tokens of esteem and remembrance. Miss M. E.
