Marvellous cunning was shown by a boy of twelve whose offences included the theft of fowls and a canary, according to a statement bv Chief-Detective Carroll in the Children’s Court at Christchurch on Saturday morning. The lad pleaded guilty to three charges of obtaining money by false pretences, and three of theft the -articles concerned being an overcoat, six White Leghorn fowls and a canary. He was placed under the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare. Chief Detective Carroll said that the bov had shown marvellous cunning for his years. He had obtained the fowls by going to a woman and telling her that his father had bought them from her husband and that be had been sent to get them. The lad took the fowls to an auction mart and put them up for sale, a deed that was really his undoing. There had been several complaints concerning a bov of his description before and he bad later admitted other charges. Regarding the. canary, the. boy had visited another woman renr e'en ting that he liad been sent to collect, the bird and also 2s 6d. Minister of Mines, has been referred to me as investigations in connection with the hall building and the public reserve upon which it is erected are being carried out by the officers of my Department. The site upon which the ‘hall is erected is known as Reserve 75, Town of Stafford containing 10 perches, and thus reserve was vested in the Stafford Literary Institute (Incorporated) in tust, for the uses of Literary Institute by Order in Council dated the 13th August, 1606. The Literary Institute referred to Was incorporated under the provisions of the Public Libraries Powers Act, 1875, by declaration filed in the office of the Supreme Court at Hokitika on the 25th, June. ISO 6. It is usual in connection with the establishment of corporate hcdic, s of this nature for provision to be made in the declaration of incorporation or in the by-laws made by the Corporation as to the manner in which the assets of the Corporation are to Ip disposed of in the event of a winding up of the Institute.
