’ EXCELSIORS V. KIWI, This senior game was played on Cass Square on Saturday aiternoon when Excelsiors after having been down in the scores until the last ten minutes managed to add another try to win by 9 points to 8." The ground was in good order, though smewhat heavy and there was no wind. Tho Kiwi team started off by at-

Hiking ...nd the play went to their advantage in the opening scrums, a mistake 'by, Davidson letting a forwarc. rush away and play went to the line where Diedrich picked up nicely ;and wept over to open the score with a neat try, which Walker converted with a good kick. Excelsiors., at,,.once set up a warm attack and the backs got going with a , nice passing run that broke down between Nightingale and Schroder. The play continued in Iyiwi quarters and then Davidson let the 'backs away for Hughes, am Staines to handle, the 'latter scorin' Y well out. Hughes failed to impro c the score which stood, at 3 to 5. Excelsiors set up another attack, but oa'lid collaring by Diedrich and West broke down the effort and a*• loos rush by Kiwi had the defence beaten till W. Hugheg got possession am shifted play back with a nice kick t. halfway. Then Henderson broke, away from a loose scrum, but kicking too hard spoilt the effort. Kelly getting offside took the Kiwi back to the red line where Gugich got offsidey ; ano from the ensuing free kick Walker kicked a neat penalty goal bringing Kiwi score, to 8 points to 3.-;i Kiwi, continued to attack, and though Exctlgiors were getting the ball in the scrum, Davidson failed to open up the play, there being for too •.much kicking for the line, and the. play slowed down till half-time came , withqut further score. - The second half proved 'of an /exciting nature the ball traveling up and down the field at a fair pace, but thrre' was a lack of cohesion among either forwards or backs the play generally being of a scrambling nature, with hardly a combined movement and an' inclination by . all the backs to kick, up and down the -field. The'.loose rushes among the Kiwi, forwards had Excelsior defence in trouble on several occasions and there were some hard fights near the line foi possession, in which were very lucky to successfully clear. Then a red forward rush, and the failure of the Kiwi backs to handle a higl kick gave Excelsiors a chance to attack and near the line offside pity gave a free kick to Excelsiors and, Davidson kicked an easy goal, 6-8. The play'Went back to midfield and there was a failure by Excelsiors tc .• open tli© game Davidson and W. Hughes continually kicking. , Then a loose- scrum saw the forwards break away and from a following scrum Hughes broke away and a nice movement saw the ball go to Staines who went over for his second try well out near the sideline. L. Hughes failed to improve. Time was now approaching and Kiwi made a special effort to improve their sccre but the defeat held and the game ended with Excelsiors the victors by 9 to 8. On the play the winners were lucky to win. Throughout the game, with brief exceptions they failed to keep t ~ gether. The forwards at times were very ragged and, there was a noticeable amount of loafing, going on at the rear of the scrum. -At times the weight went on, and then the scrum pushed their opponents all over the* field but the effort, was spasmodic. The backs failed to open out the play there being too much kicking altogeliter and this spoiled the chances of the backs. The, Kiwi team as a whole worked hard. The light forward,-, were always doing their utmost and they met with a good measure of succe-i’s The. tackling was generally sound, and the following up on several occasions deserved reward that just failed to come their way. The backs gave a good defensive display but their attack was weak and many good openings when near their opponents Hue were not properly availed of. In spite of this they put up a valiant defence and the team on their play deserved the score to have been reversed. Mr A. Cutbush was referee.

JUNIOR MATCHES. KIWI V. EXCELSIORS. ■ i This gam© played at 1.30 p,m. was of a very moderate quality, the ploy generally being confined to the forwards and when the ball went out to their backs their general amn appeared to be to kick and get rid of it.

In tli'e first half there was no score and the second sped had gone half way before following 1 a ' Kiwi rush to Excelsior quarters offside play 'gave " .'the* ppportuiiity tp f kjcjc ,la, 'fine goal. The winners had much the better of tips play, then- heavier fgonvardis th'eir opponents, ivno iiad to give at%y too much weight on the heavy group! and their backs handling weJil thty had far more .opportunities than their opponents. In tne first spell School scored a penalty goal, Adamson converting, while Rimu soon after levelled the score with a try by • Growcott, Mason .converting. : In the second half though the play went up and down the field, the gaine was in the visitors favour arid two penalty goals were added by Mason, the score being 11 to 3.
