SIAMESE REVOLT
DUE TO TAXATION BURDEN. ABSOLUTE MONARCHY PASSES. (United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) (Received this day at 10.30 a.m.) SINGAPORE, June 27. “I’jim a frail man and have no children to receive the crown.” With these somewhat pathetic words, King Prajadhipok accepted the terms as dictated by the newly formed People’s Party, whereby, without disorder and loss °f life in the capital, the coup d’etat was successfully accomplished and the last remaining absolute monarchy in tho world passes.
The King’s reply was received with cheers and he accepted an order to ensure continuance of foreign recognition of the Government, saying that he wished to avoid bloodshed. He had long had the establishment of a constitutional monarchy in mind. The King and Queen returned from the seaside resort at Huakin this morning. On arrival at Bankok a huge crowd witnessed the new constitution discussion.
The revolt is considered to be due to the heavy burden of taxation recently imposed, combined with the thought that the numerous Royal Princes were not making corresponding sacrifices in the national interest, though the King had already reduced liis own civil list by half. , It is now disclosed that the ultimatum was sent by a gunboat with representatives of the army and "avy, and he was given one hour wherein to accept. The (Prince and Princesses are not to be released until the new Government is formed.
