A JOB WINNER
AMERICAN’S NOVEL IDEA
APPLICATION BY GRAMOPHONE
SAN FRANCISCO, June 15.
In these days of scarcity of employment, when crowds bombard advertisers of help wanted, and when traffic is blocked outside establishments desiring a clerk, or other form of helper, Francis Adams, an advertising man, has attracted nation-wide attention by his extremely novel manner in winning a position.
Adams was at the end of his rope when the “big idea” came to him in New York. For weeks he had tramped from advertising agency to advertising agency with -samples of his work, recommendations and a smile. Everyone frowned and said, “No jobs available.” He has a wife and children, and the position looked desperate. Then one day lie paissed a shop where you can record your voice on a phonograph disc for a quarter of a dollar—and his problem -seemed solved. When the head of a big New York advertising agency arriving at Iris office he found a registered letter on his desk, and inside was a key and a note, “An important parcel will be delivered to you this morning. Open it with this key. It’s due any minute now.” Half an hour later the package arrived. It loked like a suitcase. The- busy executive waved all callers aside as lie unlocked it. Inside was a phonograph, and a -sign reading: “Here is a record for you. I’m all wound up, and you’re in for a cheerful earful.”
“This is Francis Adams speaking,” a pleasant voice said. “I now go on record in a nation-wide broadcast announcing my desire to effect a sound hook-up with a good job ” And so it went on for live minutes—a witty talk on the advertising ideas of Mr Adams. As tho record ended, the voice announced: “Since there arc always two sides to every matter, you might turn Ibis record over. Goodbye. I hope I will have tile pleasure of meeting you in person.” On the reverse side was a dramatic dialogue between Mr Adams nild Old Man Depression, ending with a complete rout of O.M.D.
A few hours later Mr Adams appeared in person, and got the job.
