AUCKLAND, June 23
In fining 'Henry John Rii; ton, aged 36, a hairdresser, £25 .for keeping a common gaming house, the Magistrate, Air W. R. McKean, remarked : /Not llong ,ago the: Chief ’Justice said that people who carried on the business of bookmakiug should perhaps be imprisoned rather than fined, il ‘ uppose that 1 am as reluctant as the. other Magistrates to send a man to prvon for tins class of offence, and I do not think I would check the offence. if 1 sent the accused to prison.”
