Condon, who acted foi * M nel Lindbergh, as a precaution against the vengeance of the gang with which' he negotiated and which swore to "‘get him” if be revealed tbeii rendezvous to the authorities. A week before the baby’s body was found, states the "Brooklyn Eagle,” Colonel Lindbergh told one of his intermediaries that he was "brokfe,” and that the search had cost him personally £40,000. He was forced to borrow from the bank £SOOO of the ransom paid to the hoaxers.
