SIXTY-EIGHT TO GO. SAVING IN CANTERBURY £IB,BOO. CHRISTCH URCH, June 23. ■Sixty-eight fewer teachers in Canterbury • next year and a saving of £IB,BOO in salaries twill be the effect of the raising of .thfe school entrance age from five to six years. This announcement wa«s made by the Minister of Education, the Hon. R. Masters. The total saving the Department will make 'throughout New Zealand will be £120,000. ■ The Canterbury Education Board will lose about £330 a year on its incidental grant and school committees ujider its jurisdiction will lose about £I2OO in- capitation fees. Mr Masters said that the total saving in capitation to boards will be £2OOO. He 'estimated the savings in grants to school committees, consequent on the falling-off in roll numbers, •at £9OOO. It is estimated that in schools of all grades in Canterbury there will be 3109 fewer pupils liext year. In schoo's of the third grade—Ashley end Doyleston for instance i where the roll number is so small at present, the reduction will mean their closing.

Five schools of .tfye type of Beckenham and Timarn West .will go down a grade, requiring six fewer teachers and a saving of £1685 in salaries. Four of the small schools such as Blackball and Southbridge will, be similarly affected, and the saving in salaries will be £IOBB. Schools like St. Albans, Philliprtown, Addington and Sydenham ‘will lose at- least one teacher, on £197 a year, resulting in a saving of £7BB.
