The last stage in the work of straightening the lower reach of the Waimakariri, the greatest river protection undertaking in Tna history of New Zealand, was successfully completed tins morning when a cut was made thioiigh the Spud dunes to tile sea > th l '' P'°" viciing a new outlet.. This is the final cut of three cuts, all carried out with a view to securing a fast, and unimpeded flow from the source to the sea, and reducing th e possibility of floods to a minimum. The total cost to date is £216,000.
