TIGHTENING-UP OF CONDITIONS
RETURN TO PUBLIC

The Government will permit further , oft unions • after the present one is closed,< .a. reporter.; 3 was told, to-day by the Minister of Internal Affairs. HonA. Hamilton. Mr Hamilton added that the grouping system followed in the present art union would be followed in future ones.
“The conditions under which artunions are to be run will be tightened up still more, although allowances for advertising have already been considerably curtailed, art unions will base to be under stricter supervision,” Mr Hamilton. said,and instanced that out of £37,000 in tickets sold in the last art union only £4OOO was given back in prizcp—about £ll in every £IOO.
The totalisator returned £B3 of every £IOO invested, and Tattersall’s returned far more than an art union, so that New Zealander,should be entitled to a better, run. Tlie Minister explained that it was impossible under, the prevent conditions to allow art unions for separate objects,, and the grouping system would be followed. This would have the effect of lessening the number of nrt unions, which was formerly about eight a year.
