OVER 44,000 IN MELBOURNE

The number of unemployed registered at the Government Labour Bureau in Melbourne for the fir,it week this month was the highest in the history of Victoria. The total registration.s wore 44,035 —an increase of 1439 over the previous week. The previous highest total was recorded on September sth, 1931, when the total was 42,535. Officials of the Deprtment of Labour explained that, although the declined iin the early part of the summer until they reached the 37,000 mark on December 19th, they began to rise from January enwardo as the amount of seasonal work available became lens. Apart from the metropolitan registrations it is estimated that there are 12,000 unemployed thoughout the State, making the total of about 69,000. Of the unemployed registered at the bureau 8814 were tradesmen, 8659 skilled labourers, 25,381 unskilled labourers, and 1181 youths. During the week work was found for only eight unskilled labourer,?.
