IN INDIA

PEACE TALKS PROPOSED,

GOVERNMENT INTENTIONS

(United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copy-rig l "*--.)

CALCUTTA, June 20.

Efforts are being made in a number of influential quarters in India to initiate peace talks with Gandhi, the latest being the Servants of India Society, which sent a deputation to Yeravda gaol, where Gandhi is imprisoned, to ask .Mrs Nadu to approach tne Congress leader. Gandhi’s views are not known, though it is regarded as unlikely that he will agree, unless his terms are accepted. It is understood the Government has no intention of risking another compromise with Congress by the release of prisoners and the removal of ordinances which would give Congress an opportunity of reiterating its repeated demands to set up a Congress controlled Government.
