WELLINGTON, June 17

For the fire time the Income Tax Dcpamient is thi.s year demanding u cumij from all persons whose iiuoine: exceed £2OO, and although it is sim ed officially that there wins- no moti. behind this requirement the Govern ment will be placed in possession ol particulars concerning incomes ol thousands more persons than have hitherto been obliged to supply information each year.

Up to this year all persons receiving above £250 were .requited to supply returns of income although the,' were not liable for taxation, units they received £3!)0. The cxemptioi was .recently reduced to £260. and it is stated that it i fi in view of this that the Tax Department is now asking for income tax returns by all receiving incomes of £2OO and over, ft iadmitted that there is a dirfereu' ma ruin, Imt it is stated that tln’iS bin io real significance.'

It was freely stated during the emergency session that the Government had in mind the lowering of tin• exemption below £260, and that .the opportunity would be taken to introduce something in the nature ol a bachelor or ,spinster tax. If this proposal were given serious thought '1 was not taken any further, but it is suggested now that the Government will be in a better position to assess the taxing capacity of people receiving over £4 per week, as a result of returns which must be supplied this \ ear.
