RIVERS OVERFLOW
FLOODS IN CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph—Per Press Associationj CHIIiSTCHUROH], June 17. Parts of New Brighton, Sumner, Alt. Pleasant ami Opawa, were flooded this afternoon, when the Avon and Heathcote Rivers were swollen by abnormally high tides, and backed up by continuous easterlies. They overflowed their banks, and crept over the roads. The Bexley (New Brighton) district suffered most, several small holdings being completely covered with water, which crept up to the verandahs of the vhouses, but did not flow over tbe floors. The residents express anxiety as to the result of to-morrow morning’s high tide, and some intend to remain on watch all night to protect thenproperties as far as possible.
