A CLEAN SWEEP

NOMINATION OF HOOVER. AT CHICAGO CONFERENCE. felted Press Association—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright > (Received this day at 10.15 a.m.) CHICAGO, June 16. Hoover 1 made a clean sweep of the first and only roll call, getting votes out of 1154. The others were Senator John Blaine (Winstonsin), 13, Mr Coolidge Dr. France, a former Senator, and Mr James Wadsworth (New York), each one. s The convention spent nearly all of the conclusion of the session shouting Hoover’s’' praises. In the initial roll call for the, vicepresidential nomination, Mr Curtis was just short of the 578 needed to nominate him, but the Pennsylvania delegation of ninety-four changed the vote, giving victory. The convention adjourned sine die, CHICAGO, June 16. Dr Joseph I. France (Maryland), wap forcibly ejected from the ,speakers' platform as- he sought to get the floor. His name had just been placed in nomination, and his plan had been to make a nomination himself, on behalf of a former President, Mr Coo! id go. “They will have to carry out the presidential candidate to s:op me," Dr France told the newspaper men, and the police did practically carry him out a few minutes later. Hoover wru re-nominated for President, and Mr Curtis for the Vice-Pre-sidency. Hoover’s sponsor described him us a “master in human engineering, whose shield remained unsullied after four years at White House.” Senator France, the onily other name officially nominated, received only four votes at the roll call. After Dr France had been forcibly ejected he w:>,s in a. tremendous rage, and oil the verge of collapse. He explained that h e had been authorised by the Oregon delegation, and had credentials therefore to place Mr Cool'dgo’s name for nomination.

There was considerable conjecture as to whether his plan, if suece-.jsf'i\ might not have stampeded the delegates into a demonstration, other than the carefully guided one which had been arranged to greet the naming of Hoover for nomination. A,- it was, during the roll call, Coolidge received 4J- votes. Even though his name was not official’y piaced before the Convention, delegates surrendered themselves to a tremendous noise-making wllien Hoover was nominated, and his nomination was made unanimous. t
