APPEALS FAIL
CONVICTION FOA ASSAULT. THE JOCK GARDEN CASE, l United Pres* Association—By Electm Telegraph. —Copyr ight ) LONDON, June 15. The first of the appeals by the eight men who were convicted of assaulting Air J. Garden on May 6th was heard before Judge Curlewis to-day. Counsel for the appellant sought to show that there had been a conspiracy on the part of certain people to cause the assault on Air Garden for political motives, involving the New Guard.
Judge Curlewis dismissed the'appeal, saying: "I am sorry that I cannot increasp the sentence of three months’ that already has been imposed.” Air Teece, counsel for appellants, caused a sensation by remarking: "1 am retiring from the case. I cannot see any use in remaining as junior counsel.” Mr Owen remained in. The other appeals have not yet been heard.
Following on the first New Guard appeal, three other appeals were later dismissed. The remaining four were adjourned till to-morrow.
